The Freeland Youth Wrestling Club
The Freeland Youth Wrestling Club is a nonprofit community education organization in Freeland, Michigan run by a group of dedicated volunteer coaches under the direction of a volunteer Board of Directors.
The club has adopted as its primary philosophy: “We either win or we learn!.”
The club is primarily geared to provide Freeland’s elementary school aged and middle school aged youngsters with an opportunity to participate in and learn the fundamentals of wrestling in a positive and fun environment.
The program strives to provide opportunities for youngsters to learn sportsmanship, set goals, build confidence and self-esteem, develop physically and emotionally, work and cooperate with others and test their skills in organized competition.
The club’s ultimate goal is to help raise the awareness of and the participation in the sport of wrestling in Freeland. This is accomplished by developing and promoting a basic understanding and appreciation of wrestling on the part of both parents and youngsters, and to prepare both for the next levels of wrestling in middle and high school programs.
The club’s practice season starts in early December and runs through the end of the tournament season. Practices are held in the Freeland Middle School wrestling room and sometimes at alternate locations.
The club is active in the North Eastern Michigan Wrestling Association (NEMWA), whose tournament season runs on Saturdays from early January through late February or early March of each year.
The club is open to participation by boys and girls from age 5 through age 14 (although high school students are not eligible).
